Dr Zheng Liu

Department of Sociology

Biography:

Graduated with an MPhil and a PhD from the Department of Sociology, University of Cambridge, Dr Zheng Liu’s research uses interdisciplinary tools and concepts to investigate the interplay between culture, technology, power and societal change. Her current research is focused on AI-based communication technologies and their implications for living and communicating in a digitised and algorithmised milieu. She is interested in questions such as: How is AI changing the way in which people behave, communicate, and interact? Should we trust algorithms so much so that we open our domestic and private spheres to them? How smart can chatbots and virtual assistants be and will they replace human interlocutors? And finally, how can we understand the changing relationship between human and technology in the era of AI? Focusing on AI’s impact on everyday lives and activities, Zheng hopes to illuminate our understanding of the width and depth of AI's influence on our social lives and social relations and what we should do about it.
