Office Phone: +44 (0) 1223 763851

Biography:

I am the Coordinator of the Trust & Technology Initiative, and a researcher in the Compliant and Accountable Systems Group in the Department of Computer Science and Technology (Computer Laboratory). I'm also affiliated with the Microsoft Cloud Computing Research Centre. I hold a PhD in Law and an LLM in Law and Governance from Queen’s University, Belfast. For my PhD, I studied machine learning in commercial, state, and political internet surveillance, data protection, and privacy.

Research Interests

My research looks at the intersection of new and emerging technologies and society from an interdisciplinary perspective. I am interested in legal responses to new technologies, tech industry business models, and platform power; technical means for improving legal compliance and accountability of complex systems; and theoretical approaches to privacy, surveillance, and emerging tech. Current research projects look at legal standards for automated decision-making and the development of legally compliant and reviewable automated systems; regulation of the use of recommender systems in online services; and the prospects of various technical solutions for facilitating compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

About us

The Trust & Technology Initiative brings together and drives forward interdisciplinary research from Cambridge and beyond to explore the dynamics of trust and distrust in relation to internet technologies, society and power; to better inform trustworthy design and governance of next generation tech at the research and development stage; and to promote informed, critical, and engaging voices supporting individuals, communities and institutions in light of technology’s increasing pervasiveness in societies.
